Winter can be hard on hair. Cold air outside and dry heating indoors pull moisture out of your hair and scalp. You may notice dryness, static, frizz, more breakage and a flaky scalp. A few small changes can make a big difference.
Why Hair Struggles in Winter
Cold air holds less moisture, and heated rooms dry the air even more. Hot showers, woolen hats and scarves can also add to dryness, rubbing and static. Together these can leave hair dull and brittle, and the scalp itchy.
Use Lukewarm Water
Hot water feels good in winter, but it strips the scalp and hair of natural oils. Wash with lukewarm water, and finish with a cooler rinse if you can bear it.
Do Not Over-Wash
If your hair is dry, you may not need to wash as often as in summer. Wash when your scalp needs it, and use a gentle, moisturizing shampoo.
Condition More
A richer conditioner on the lengths and ends helps hair hold moisture. Once a week you can use a deep conditioning mask. Leave-in conditioner or a few drops of a light oil on the ends can help with frizz and static.
Fight Static
- Use a wooden or anti-static comb instead of a plastic one.
- Apply a little leave-in conditioner or hair oil to the ends.
- Choose hats and scarves lined with smooth fabric like satin or silk, or wear a smooth layer under a woolen hat.
Never Go Out With Wet Hair
Wet hair is fragile, and it can freeze or tangle in the cold. Dry your hair before heading out, and avoid sleeping with wet hair, which can lead to tangles and breakage.
Go Easy on Heat
In dry winter air, hair is already fragile. Use a heat protectant, lower your tools’ temperature, and let your hair air-dry when possible.
Look After Your Scalp
A dry, flaky scalp is common in winter. Use a gentle shampoo, avoid scratching, and massage the scalp lightly to improve comfort. If flakes are heavy, itchy or red, it may be dandruff or another scalp condition, so use a dandruff shampoo as directed or see a doctor.
Hydrate and Eat Well
Drinking water and eating a balanced diet supports your hair along with the rest of your body. Don’t forget to add a humidifier to your room if the air is very dry.
Keep Up With Trims
Dry hair breaks more easily, so regular trims stop split ends from getting worse.
The Short Version
Use lukewarm water, condition more, protect your hair from static and heat, never go out with wet hair, and look after your scalp. A little extra moisture goes a long way in winter.
